About us

Located in the heart of Yerevan, the Armenian National Opera and Ballet Theatre is one of the country’s most important cultural institutions. It is also an architectural masterpiece created by the internationally renowned architect and academician Alexander Tamanyan.

The building’s design received international recognition at the 1937 World Exhibition in Paris. Today, its classical architecture, grand stage, spacious halls and amphitheatre with more than 1,070 seats remain central to Yerevan’s cultural identity.

The theatre opened its curtain for the first time on January 20, 1933. Since then, it has played a defining role in the development of Armenian opera and ballet and has introduced generations of audiences to major national and international works.

Artists of the theatre regularly perform on international stages, while internationally recognised singers, conductors, dancers and choreographers appear in Yerevan.

Today, the theatre continues to expand its repertoire with Armenian and international opera and ballet masterpieces while preserving its artistic heritage and traditions.
